Where am I #19

The 2014 Winter Olympics kicked off today at Sochi. In honor of the Games, where am I in this pic?

Gringo - aka Scott - was born outside of Chicago and has lived most of his life in or around big cities. He spent two years of his adult life in Mexico City (talk about big cities!) and fell in love with Mexican food, history, and women, all while weathering the culture shock. Life's journey has since brought him to rural Tennessee, perhaps the biggest culture shock of them all. Scott also enjoys movies, hiking, and travel in general.

    1. That’s right! Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, hosted the Winter Games in 1936, while Berlin hosted the Summer Games that same year.

Thanks for guessing Andy, and I hope you enjoy this year’s games from your Moscow “vantage point.”

  1. Well, it’s not Nagano or Sapporo, since I know that the only place in Japan you’ve been to is Tokyo.

So, hmmm…. I’m gonna second Andy’s and go with Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

    1. You guessed correctly, though Andy gets credit as the first one to respond. You’re right that I’ve never been to Nagano or Sapporo, but did you know that in addition to hosting the 1972 Winter Games, Sapporo was slated to have them in 1940 as well, only for the Games to be cancelled because of WWII?

If you were wondering, in addition to Garmisch-Partenkirchen I’ve also seen Winter Olympic ski jump stadiums in Oslo, Innsbruck, Squaw Valley, and Calgary…in addition to other Winter Olympic venues in Sarajevo.

      Thanks for playing!

      1. Although Andy got it before me, I gotta say I cheated a bit, as I googled different Olympic ski jump locations. Others I strongly leaned towards were Squaw Valley, Lake Placid, and Sarajevo.

I’ve visited only summer locations: Athens, Barcelona, and Munich.
